š I feel that way too sometimes. Like, I canāt remember simple words in English! And then when Iām texting with folks back in the States, Iām using random German wordsā¦. They donāt know what Iām talking about! Are Finnish and Swedish similar? Iām not asking to imply you are not tri-lingual! But Iāve heard the Scandinavians can āpretty muchā understand each other. Is it just different accents? Or, how does that work? Swedish, norwegian and danish are pretty similar. I can understand written norwegian and danish, and pretty well spoken norwegian, and spoken danish if they speak slowly, lol! But finnish is completely different - the way it sounds, its pronunciation, rules, everything. Iām finnish (even tho Iām finno-swedish, meaning in a bilingual country Iām one of the unlucky 5% who has swedish as a mother tongue) and Iāve lived in finland my whole life and read it in school since very early, majority of TV and radio is in finnish, so I should speak finnish, right? No! Iāve read it since I was 9 in school yeah, but never had to actually use it. I used to joke that Iād speak in emergency cases only, but tbh I feel it's impossible to learn! I used to be one of the people who would rather walk around in a store for 2 hours, looking for something, pissed off, than ask for help in finnish, lol! And it is one of the hardest languages to learn. But if you wanna work in finland (and your pride (as a finn) wonāt let you use english) you have to speak finnish, so at 27 when I was applying for work I just decided I speak finnish and just started. And now Iāve been speaking it for 4 years at work! Still have no clue about most of the grammar lmao š but at work they claim they forget Iām not a native finnish speaker, so I guess āfake til you make itā lol! Still scared to death to give presentations in finnish tho! Or talk to people āhigher upā like bosses above my boss. And still google a lot of grammar before sending emails! Luckily there are so many different slangs in finnish so even if I mess up the grammar, itās most likely how you say something in slang somewhere in finland lol! And I understand everything, but trying get the grammar correct in sentences, like how you bend words, is just impossible š I just stopped caring! Finnish has like 4 grammar rules, but then it has 47643225678953222 exceptions to the rules that you just have to know by heart, and the exceptions have exceptions too in case the word describes a feeling or something elseā¦ so no I donāt recommend finnish if youāre looking for a new language š

I also lolāed because I just saw this meme thingā¦ someone was trying to learn Finnish on the Duolingo app, and it showed a multiple choice question. Poor person had like 20 options, and they were all barely different!! For one word!!! Not even like German is all, choose the proper article and adjective to go with this noun in this certain caseā¦ you get like four options. Crazy Finnish!! Good on you for just going for it! š and just remember, bossās bosses are still just peopleā¦ most of the time, even if you mess up, theyāll forgive you for at least trying and owning upā¦ well, thatās the way it seems here in Europe. As I typed that, I imagined all the power crazed higher ups I encountered in the statesā¦ and wait, Iām getting into job performance, not language skills. For speaking different languages, I think most folks are generally forgiving, and just happy if you give it your best effort. Youāre always going to judge yourself more harshly than the folks youāre talking toā¦ well, here in Germany at least. Iāve only had one old German man yell at me for asking a question āinformallyāā¦ ha! Little did he know! I did ask it āformallyā, my accent was just terrible!! And Iāve run into him since then, and Iām pretty sure he has dementia and shouldnāt be walking around unsupervised. Sorry, ramblingā¦ but wait, thereās more! Thereās this Danish comedian on YouTube (and Instagram) KellieLouiseKillJoy (something like that, if youāre interested and canāt find her, Iāll post something) and she does these quick skits where itās like the āEnglish Languageā asking the Scandinavian countries for their different words for things (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, and sometimes she lets the Faroe Islands chime in) š¤£, and now that youāve explained Finnish to me, Iāll probably enjoy it even more! But itās usually Finland with some āoff the wallā translation. It always makes me giggleā¦ Do you have any big presentations coming up for work? Have you heard of the Sami People?

Omg, there are so many good memes about finnish, donāt even get me started š I think these two are my favorite and yeah, I know theyāre just people, it just kinda adds extra pressure when youāre a finn, from finland, and everyone expects you to speak fluent finnish but you donāt lol š like if I was from another country, everyone would understand, but lots of people donāt even know finland is bilingual. Like finnish finns sometimes yell at us on the streets to go back to sweden where we came from. When we go to sweden, the swedes think we speak swedish because weāre polite, and compliment us on how well we speak swedishā¦like thanks! You too! š (because finno swedish and sweden swedish have different accents, kinda like british and american english)š but yeah, I have to say, finns are extremely understanding and polite, and they would never make fun of anyone speaking finnish wrong. No one of my colleagues have ever pointed out some mistake Iāve made or made fun of me ever, in anyway, and they always understand (or usually) what I'm trying to say! And if me and my swedish speaking friends ever need motivation, we just remember that we are always the ones changing languages in conversations, because we CAN š and to the rude finns who yell at us for speaking swedish we say that we speak whay we want, they speak what they canā¦ š we have Sara Forsberg from finland who does similar comedian skits about languages! She was even on Ellen show! I donāt have any big presentations in finish no, luckily most of them are in english, since our language at work is english (because we have quite a lot of foreigners) but next week I have a presentation fr my project team about the nanobret assay weāre setting up, and I know nothing about nanobretā¦ so I will speak about a method I know nothing about, in a language Iāmnot comfortable with šš luckily my colleague will be with me, and he knows more about the method, and heās a native finnish speaker š and yeah, we have sami people in finland. Even a smaller majority than swedish speaking finns! But theyāre pretty high up north, in lapland.

That truly sucks. How do create your passwords? I let my chrome suggest some real complicated b.s. every time. Iāve got a friends who does āthe codingā for a living, and she said thatās the best way to circumvent hackers. We all unwillingly give out random bits of info, that just make it so easy for the hacker folks to āgetā us. What have you tweeted recently that may have been controversial? Why would they go after your specific account?

So Finland is a dual language country! I believed you were the āonlyā Swedish mother-tongue person, struggling against all the the Finnish natives. Iām glad you have Swedish speakers to connect with! I also have no clue what nanobret is, and Iām really glad you have a partner for that presentation! Phew! š®āšØ Thanks for telling me about Sara Forsberg, Iām going to look her up. Did you find KellyLouiseKilljoy?
Omg, reading those memes you shared!!! I didnāt understand ALL, but I got some good giggles. Danke dir.
And I asked about the Sami, because Iāve done a couple of those DNA test things, and Iām somewhere between 5 to 15% Samiā¦ and I had never even heard of those folks before! Itās weird how those tests come back with different resultsā¦ probably because itās all b.s. š

She had one video about Finland being over dramatic, lol, made me think of this I love watching these shows where they renovate your home, like Love it or list it, or Extreme home makeover, and we see the american or canadian versions and the finnish versions, and e.g. in the US peoplesā reaction to their home being completely remade is like āAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH OOOOOMMMGGG OMG OMGā *crying* āAAAAAAAAAAHHHHā and then the finnish version, the finns walk in and barely lift an eyebrow and theyāre like āMhmā¦ yeah, itās niceā¦ā
