I really enjoy docs so i thought I would make a thread for them in case people want to discuss any or suggest any
Here are a few that I have seen/recommend:
Going Clear- HBO
Filmmaker Alex Gibney interviews former members of the Church of Scientology and reveals abuses and strange practices within the controversial organization.
Into the Abyss -Netflix
Director: Werner Herzog
Herzog’s film takes a hard look at the death penalty through the lens of a triple homicide committed in Texas in 2000. Michael Perry and Jason Burkett, then 18, killed three people over a car. Perry got the death penalty while Burkett, aided by an emotional plea from his father, only received life. As we all know by now, Herzog is a master of the bare-boned interview, and with his guidance, the subjects in Into the Abyss speak emotionally, profoundly, even poetically about their circumstances and their views—eventually shedding light on so many aspects of crime and punishment in the United States. The cycle of violence and incarceration in families and communities, the devastation of loss, and, perhaps most strikingly, the toll capital punishment takes on those people hired to carry it out—Herzog’s eye for interesting characters and empathetic touch as an interviewer turn an ugly subject into something unexpectedly vital. Herzog’s intention is never to push an anti-death penalty agenda, but it’s hard to imagine one could watch his film and not feel, at the very least, deeply conflicted about a position any different.
The Jinx- HBO
From director Andrew Jarecki and producer Marc Smerling comes this groundbreaking six-part documentary series that sheds new light on real-estate scion Robert Durst, who has been accused of three murders, but never convicted.
H.H. Holmes- Netflix -Fun fact: Em used the intro for his song I'm Having a Relapse
This chilling documentary follows the macabre exploits of 19th-century serial killer Herman Webster Mudgett, who went by the alias of Dr. Henry Howard Holmes. A remarkably effective con artist and liar, Holmes managed to construct a massive building in Chicago where he operated a labyrinthine hotel for his intended victims. The film features footage of key locations in the life of Holmes, as well as interviews with experts and dramatic reenactments.
Unacklowedge (I watched it on VUDU)
Disclosure Project founder Dr. Steven M. Greer offers evidence of extraterrestrial contact, including top-secret testimonials, documents and never-before-seen UFO footage.
There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane -Youtube
On Sunday, July 26, 2009, Diane Schuler left a campground in upstate New York where she was vacationing with her family and went towards her home in Long Island. She was driving with five young children: her son, her daughter and three nieces. Four hours into the drive, she drove the wrong way on the Taconic State Parkway for almost two miles, crashing into an oncoming SUV, killing herself and seven others. One of the worst accidents in New York history, it took Diane's actions to under a microscope as a result. Find out more about what was going on that day and what led to the horrific crash.
